The Solution: Facilitation

  • We need to build engagement and buy-in in order to deliver on results.
  • We need to tap into the group's wisdom and would benefit from some support in structuring the discussions.
  • We are struggling with strategic clarity and direction.
  • We are facing a challenging dilemma and aren't sure where to focus our energy.
  • Can we create a space where everyone can contribute so it's not just the leader driving the agenda?
  • We are excited about Strategic Planning. Just not sure where to start.
  • Someone to manage the process and discussion would really help us balance participation and results.

Do any of these sound familiar?

Your Challenge...

Let's discuss what's possible

Everyone has wisdom
We need everyone's wisdom for the wisest result
Everyone will hear others and be heard
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts
There are no wrong answers

Our working assumptions

Facilitators are often utilized to provide an impartial perspective, process leadership, expert guidance and navigate conflict.

A facilitator is a person (or persons) that makes processes easier, helping groups or individuals achieve goals, collaborate, and solve problems without taking a direct, directive role. They focus on the how of a conversation or project, fostering participation and structure, rather than just the content.

Key Characteristics of a Facilitator include:
Neutrality: They typically do not take sides or impose their own opinions.
Process-Oriented: They manage how the group works, not just what they work on.
Enabling: They help others find their own answers

What is Facilitation?

  • Explore a critical issue, led by a neutral party, to ensure optimal participation

  • Build alignment and agreement across the team

  • Foster creativity and innovation

  • Prioritize work with many concurrent and at times, conflicting priorities

  • Gather feedback a variety of sources

  • Engage in consultations on an issue

  • Visioning Workshop & Strategic Planning Sessions

  • Cascading strategy into prioritized work and team objectives

Events can range from team meetings, to community engagement events to Executive Retreats.  We will work with you to design an approach that meets your needs.

When would we use a Facilitator?

When You Want to...

  • Increased Productivity and Efficiency: Facilitators keep discussions on track and manage time effectively, preventing wasted time in unproductive, unfocused meetings.

  • Better Decision-Making: Structured processes allow groups to identify key issues, explore options, and reach consensus, often leading to better decisions than those made by individuals.

  • Enhanced Collaboration and Engagement: By fostering an inclusive environment, facilitation encourages participation from all members, including introverted ones, ensuring diverse perspectives are heard.

  • Conflict Management: Facilitators provide a neutral, unbiased presence to help resolve conflicts, overcome disagreements, and guide teams through complex dynamics.

  • Enhanced Creativity and Innovation: Facilitators use specialized techniques (like brainstorming or structured brainstorming) to encourage thinking outside the box, accelerating problem-solving.

  • Greater Buy-in and Ownership: When a team is actively guided toward a solution together, members are more likely to support and own the final outcome.

  • Improved Organizational Culture: By fostering open communication and effective teamwork.

Facilitation is particularly valuable in strategic planning, change management, and when managing remote or multidisciplinary teams.

What are the benefits of Facilitation?

  • Do we need diverse perspectives? Is it necessary to get input from various interested parties to ensure a successful outcome?

  • What is the level of trust? Is there conflict, or are there hidden agendas that need to be managed?

  • Who holds the power? Is the group hierarchical, or is it a flat, collaborative structure? A facilitator can help balance power dynamics.

  • What is the group's attitude? Are they engaged and ready to work, or are they skeptical, tired, or resistant?
  • What is the objective of our meeting? Is the goal to generate ideas, solve a complex problem, build consensus, or make a decision?

  • Is the path clear? If the answer is already known and just needs to be communicated, training or a presentation is better. If the answer requires collective wisdom, use facilitation.

  • What does "success" look like for this meeting? What specifically needs to be achieved by the end of the session?

  • Is this a "one-off" decision or a long-term process? Facilitation is ideal for navigating complex, ongoing, or sensitive topics.

Things to consider

I will work with you to identify your goals and priorities and build an environment that fosters trust, collaboration and focus.

We will have an initial call so we can get to know each other and develop a shared understanding of your current state and what you would like to achieve.  I'll ask lots of questions and take lots of notes.

As we start to think about how and what you would like to accomplish, we'll also look at HOW we will work:

  • Is there enough time? Facilitation takes longer than lecturing. Does the group have the bandwidth to explore issues deeply?
  • Do we have the right tools? Can we create an interactive environment (breakout rooms, brainstorming tools, whiteboards)?
  • Is the environment safe? Can participants feel comfortable, respected, and willing to share openly?
  • How will we handle disagreements? Is the group prepared to treat differing opinions as a resource rather than a problem?

I will explain the methodology and approach and together we’ll identify potential challenges that might surface. Where appropriate and with your consent, I will bring in co-facilitator(s) to ensure a positive and productive experience for all.

Facilitation arrangements will vary based on your needs, and may be conducted in-person or virtually, depending on the work.

Let's explore what you have in mind and see what's possible.

You are in the right place.

It is also possible that you aren't sure what your group needs, but you do know that they need something (or someone) to help them get unstuck.

You may have something in mind, a specific problem or situation, but you are not sure how a facilitator can help.

How do we start?

Let's discuss

Or maybe even: been there, done that. LOVED IT & was so valuable. Ready to do it again.

And yes, I have been known to travel with my post-its, markers and flipcharts. You never know when an opportunity for brainstorming might arise!

If we discover we need to adjust our approach, my experience as an Executive Coach, Instructor and Consultant enables me to build an approach with you that could include other interventions.

I have a strong network of experienced facilitators that we can partner with, if and when that meets your needs.

I'm serious about results. We are spending time and energy together for a reason. Let's honour that.

I am naturally collaborative and curious, and we'll partner  to design an approach to foster engagement, creativity and voice.

I have extensive experience facilitating challenging discussions among a range of group sizes and memberships.

I am trained in the Participatory Framework and Group Facilitation Methods through ICA Canada.
